The new Sydney Metro City & Southwest line, which runs through the heart of Sydney, is preparing to open its doors to passengers. As part of an ambitious plan to provide Sydney with a world-class public transport service, its realization is now one step closer. All metro trains have recently completed a key testing milestone, having traveled at least one return journey between Tallawong and Sydenham. This means that trial operations, which are scheduled to begin in a few months, are progressing smoothly.

Trial operations are the final testing phase before opening and include timetable and operational testing. Minister for Transport Jo Haylen expressed confidence that this will enable Sydney to provide a world-class metro service. In particular, trains are scheduled to run every four minutes during peak hours, providing citizens with an easy and reliable metro service.

The trains have undergone meticulous testing, including stopping at each station to ensure the train and platform screen doors work as designed and that passenger help points and information displays function properly. This careful testing ensures that passengers can expect a reliable service based on the new timetable.

This project is a crucial step in integrating the Metro Northwest line and the new city section. Extensive integration testing is being conducted to ensure that the trains, signaling, and station systems operate seamlessly across the entire line. So far, over 8,700 of the 11,000 required testing hours have been completed.

Starting in mid-2024, passengers will be able to take advantage of a fast and reliable public transport service that boasts record travel times, with journeys of about seven minutes from Martin Place to Crows Nest, about 30 minutes from Sydenham to Macquarie University, 15 minutes from Central to Chatswood, and just three minutes from Victoria Cross in North Sydney to Barangaroo.

This development is the next phase of the Sydney Metro, with the T3 Bankstown line scheduled to close for 12 months to provide a four-minute-interval metro service by the end of 2025. This is an important step to provide reliable service for commuters from Sydenham to the CBD.

The successful progress of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project will benefit the citizens of Sydney above all. It will revolutionize the city's transport system by providing faster and more convenient public transport options and ultimately making Sydney a better place to live. These developments will help solidify Sydney's position as a world-class city.
