Automated speed enforcement cameras are one of the latest innovations in the ongoing effort to improve road safety in the U.S. The number of communities using these cameras grew from 211 in February 2023 to 222 as of March 2024, a notable increase made possible by the 2021 Infrastructure Law. This law allows up to 10% of highway safety funds to be allocated to non-infrastructure projects, such as automated traffic enforcement.

The effectiveness of these cameras is significant. According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, this technology can reduce the proportion of speeding vehicles by 14% to 65% and cut the number of serious injuries and fatal crashes by up to 44%. In a 2022 report, the U.S. Department of Transportation also stated that the equitable deployment of automated speed enforcement can save lives and provide substantial safety benefits.

Areas like California and New York City are already actively using this technology. New York City, in particular, has installed over 2,000 speed cameras in school zones, reporting impressive results: a 73% reduction in speeding and a one-third decrease in pedestrian injuries at fixed camera locations from 2019 to 2021.

However, like any technology, automated speed enforcement cameras face criticism. Some view them as a method of unfair targeting or simply a means to generate revenue. Despite these concerns, the use of automated enforcement technology is increasing nationwide and is considered a necessary measure in many cities that have seen a surge in fatalities after de-prioritizing traditional traffic enforcement.

While the development and expansion of automated enforcement technology are crucial steps toward road safety, continuous monitoring, evaluation, and building public trust are necessary to use this technology effectively and fairly. Finding a balance between safety and personal freedom is always challenging, but it will be important to maximize the benefits of such technology while addressing concerns.
