Spain's infrastructure manager, Adif, has recently signed contracts with CAF worth over €150 million for signaling projects on Spain's northern 1,000 mm gauge network, as well as on high-speed and conventional networks. These contracts are a crucial step toward further modernizing and enhancing the safety of Spain's railway system.

Key Contract Details

CAF Signaling, in a joint venture with FCC Industrial and Revenga Ingenieros, has been awarded a €214 million contract to install ERTMS Level 2 on the 200 km high-speed line from Murcia to Almería, which is part of the Mediterranean Corridor, and its branch line from Pulpí to Águilas. The contract includes the supply and installation of interlocking, train protection systems, obstacle detection systems, centralized traffic control (CTC), and communications systems. The joint venture will maintain all the new systems and equipment for four years.

Murcia-Almería High-Speed Rail Project

The Murcia-Almería high-speed rail project, led by Adif AV, is worth a total of €3.5 billion. Civil works are complete or are underway on all sections. The first electrification works are in progress, and design work for track laying is continuing. This project will further advance Spain's key transportation infrastructure and strengthen inter-regional connectivity.

Upgrades to Existing Networks

For the conventional network, Adif has signed a contract with CAF Signaling to upgrade the Orense traffic control center in the northwestern region of Galicia. Additionally, CAF will replace the telephone block system on the C9 line of the Madrid commuter network, a 1,000 mm gauge line running from Cercedilla to Los Cotos.

In Asturias, CAF Signaling will upgrade the fixed communications and signaling systems on line 764, which runs from Trubia to Collanzo. Fixed communications and signaling systems will also be upgraded on line 762 from Trubia to San Esteban de Pravia and line 740 from Pravia to Cudillero.

Conclusion

These contracts between CAF and Adif mark a significant step forward in greatly improving Spain's railway system and increasing safety and efficiency through various technological upgrades. Through these investments and efforts, Spain's railway infrastructure will be further modernized, and its role as a sustainable mode of transport will be strengthened.
