California is revolutionizing the future of rail transport. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) recently placed an additional order for six hydrogen trains under an existing contract, deciding to acquire a total of 10 hydrogen FLIRT H2 trains through its partnership with Stadler. This decision marks a significant step toward decarbonizing the state's entire rail network.
The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and Caltrans aim to solidify their position as leaders in sustainable transportation. As Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin said, California is moving toward a "cleaner, more connected transportation system," and the introduction of hydrogen-powered passenger trains is a testament to this.
These innovative hydrogen trains are expected to begin service in 2027 and will play a major role on the extended Valley Rail service line, connecting Merced and Sacramento via the Altamont Corridor Express and Amtrak San Joaquins services. This development is expected to make a major contribution to achieving environmentally friendly mobility by providing California residents with a sustainable and innovative mode of transportation.
