Technological Changes and New Challenges
According to Olivier Haven, Global Key Account Manager at nVent Schroff, "We've replaced the copper cables inside trackside cabinets with fiber optic cables. While fiber optic cables have less commercial value than copper cables, which reduces the risk of theft, they have exposed a central part of the rail network to the general public." This change further highlights the need to strengthen the physical security of digital systems.
Innovation in Physical Security
Brendan Queen, Vice President of the Rail Business Unit at nVent Schroff, mentioned the development of innovative cabinets to respond to new challenges. These cabinets are designed to protect the latest digital systems from malicious attacks and extreme weather events. Developed in collaboration with telecommunications companies and OEMs in France and Germany, the cabinets use "vandal-proof" construction techniques.
The Importance of Physical Security Beyond Cybersecurity
Haven emphasizes that physical enclosures are just as important as cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity threats get a lot of attention, but without a physical enclosure, hackers can access the network more easily. Therefore, physical security is an essential element in protecting the network."
The Need for Proper Investment
Queen points out, "Introducing advanced technology alone is not enough." He adds, "We need to invest in the right places to build a system that can transport passengers safely." This is a particularly crucial element in high-speed rail operations, as an accident can have catastrophic consequences. Through these changes and challenges, railway networks continue to evolve, and the need to build a safer and more efficient transport system through investment and innovation is becoming increasingly emphasized.
