Stockholm's public transport system is taking another step forward. The Stockholm Transport Authority (SL) recently announced a new partnership with Alstom, placing an additional order for 20 C30 four-car metro trains. This brings the total number of trains to be supplied under the 2013 master agreement with Bombardier to 116. This decision is seen as a necessary measure to increase capacity, as Stockholm aims to transport over one million passengers per day.
The new C30 trains will be deployed on the Red and Blue lines first. With 63 C30 trains already in service, SL plans to introduce 27 more in 2024 and "more" in 2025, which suggests the city's transport infrastructure is continuously evolving.
The C30 trains are the first in the Stockholm metro to be equipped with air conditioning and have 24 doors to allow for quick boarding and alighting, which helps reduce dwell times at stations. These trains also significantly improve accessibility with dedicated spaces for wheelchairs, strollers, and prams. It is also notable that they are designed to be upgraded for driverless operation on the Stockholm metro network in the future.
Another important part of this project is the replacement of existing vehicles. The new C30 trains are replacing the aging eight-car C6, C14, and C15 metro trains, some of which are called CX vehicles, built in the 1970s. SL began removing two CX vehicles from service each week starting in May 2021, and the last CX, a C14, ran on the Red Line on February 12. This shows that the Stockholm metro system is moving toward modernization.
SL will also rebuild 12 trains for future operation on the Saltsjö suburban line, which includes 17 CX vehicles. This is a good example of how Stockholm's public transport system is evolving. Meanwhile, the recent completion of the refurbishment of the C20 metro vehicles is another notable development. The retrofitting focused on improving passenger comfort by reconfiguring the seating and adding more grab handles.
As Stockholm's public transport system continues to modernize and develop, the city can provide safer, more efficient, and more accessible transport options. These changes will make Stockholm a better city to live in and will positively impact everyone who uses public transport.
