Transport for London (TfL) has successfully partnered with Yunex Traffic Limited to migrate its aging traffic signal system to a cloud-based Real-Time Optimization (RTO) system. This world-leading upgrade will make London's road network management more efficient and safer.
Introduction of the Cloud-Based Real-Time Optimization System
TfL manages one of Europe's largest traffic signal networks, with approximately 6,400 automated traffic signal intersections and pedestrian crossings. This network will significantly improve journey times, traffic flow, and incident response capabilities across London. The RTO system addresses the challenges of London's complex and outdated road layout, providing the road network with resilience and future-proofing.
Seamless Transition of the Traffic System
Approximately 4,000 intersections, 1,500 pedestrian crossings, and over 16,000 traffic detectors across Greater London were migrated to the new system without affecting London's road network for two weeks. The process focused on ensuring the safety of Londoners while maximizing the efficiency of the road network.
Enhancing TfL's Traffic Management System
TfL's new RTO system will revolutionize the existing traffic light control system that has kept London's traffic moving for over 30 years. With the new system, TfL will be able to mitigate road network management issues and prepare for the future. Traffic signals also play a key role in ensuring the safety of Londoners and enabling TfL to operate an efficient bus network.
Introduction of the Intelligent Adaptive Control Optimization System Fusion
The RTO system also provides TfL with a platform to introduce a new intelligent adaptive control optimization system, Fusion. The Fusion system will use a wide range of modern data source technologies to play a pivotal role in improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion, and aiding traffic flow across the city.
Efforts for a Sustainable Future
Carl Eddleston, TfL's Head of Network Management and Resilience, said, "London's road network plays a vital role in enabling millions of journeys every day, and we are committed to making sure people can walk, cycle, get the bus, and drive as safely and efficiently as possible. The new traffic management system will be a game changer for London." The system will better manage the road network, tackle congestion, reduce delays for people choosing healthier travel options, and improve air quality.
Dr. Wilke Reints of Yunex Traffic emphasized, "We are delighted to be at the heart of this groundbreaking program, working closely with TfL to develop this innovative solution for transport authorities in the UK and worldwide." He added, "RTO provides a powerful and stable system that meets the needs of the world's largest cities, helping to improve air quality, reduce congestion, and make sustainable travel more attractive and accessible for everyone."
Through this innovation, TfL and Yunex Traffic Limited are managing London's road network more safely and efficiently, laying the groundwork for the future development of its transport system.
