Planned New Rail Line Connecting Vienna Airport and Bruck an der Leitha
The project to build a new rail link connecting Vienna Airport and the town of Bruck an der Leitha has advanced to the next stage, as ÖBB Infrastruktur, Austria's railway infrastructure manager, has submitted its environmental impact report.
First proposed in 2015, the route for this new rail line was finalized in 2021 and is now awaiting final plan approval from the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK). Once the 26 km long double-track railway is constructed, travel time between the airport and the nearby town will be reduced to 15 minutes, and connectivity with northern Burgenland in the state of Lower Austria will be significantly improved.
The railway plan includes a new underground station at Enzersdorf an der Fischa and new stations at Wilfleinsdorf, Sarasdorf, and Fischamend, providing the residents of this area with efficient rail connectivity for the first time. The BMK is expected to complete the environmental impact assessment in 2026, with preliminary work beginning in 2027 and completion targeted for 2034.
ÖBB has been actively investing in infrastructure and rail vehicles in recent months. This project is one of many included in the five-year plan announced by the state-owned rail operator last year, with €1.88 billion (approximately $2 billion) allocated for construction. The total €21.1 billion plan, described as "Austria's largest railway package," has allocated funds for various rail projects across the country, including the new Köstendorf-Salzburg line.
This rail link project is expected to contribute significantly to local economic revitalization and increased transportation convenience, marking an important milestone in the development of Austria's rail infrastructure.
